Two pathways through which violent screening acts on algae powder
The first pathway is mechanical impact. Conventional vibrating screens use relatively high vibration acceleration to drive material into large-amplitude throwing motions on the screen surface, and the collision energy between particles and between particles and the screen mesh is relatively high. For algae powder particles that are brittle or already have microcracks, this repeated impact may cause secondary breakage, increasing the proportion of fine powder in the finished product and shifting the particle-size distribution toward the fine end. Breakage itself is not a chemical change, but it alters the bulk density and flowability of the powder, which in turn affects metering stability in downstream mixing, tableting or filling processes.
The second pathway is frictional heat generation and local temperature rise. When particles jump at high frequency on the screen surface, friction between particle and particle and between particle and screen mesh converts mechanical energy into heat, creating microscopic local temperature rises near contact points. The stability window of phycocyanin uses 45 °C as an important reference; continuous exposure to relatively high-temperature environments increases its degradation kinetic constant and shortens its half-life. The screening process itself does not introduce an external heat source, but if vibration intensity is too high and the material layer tumbles too vigorously, the accumulation of frictional heat becomes a non-negligible additional exposure factor.
The vibration mode of a rotary vibratory sieve differs from that of a linear screen. Rather than throwing material at high speed in a single direction, it uses eccentric weights at the upper and lower ends of a vertical vibration motor to generate compound vibration superimposing horizontal, vertical and inclined directions. After material is fed at the center, the horizontal component causes it to spread evenly outward, the vertical component causes slight jumping that loosens the material layer, and the inclined component forms an involute spiral trajectory extending from the center to the edge.
The contribution of this motion configuration to “gentleness” lies in the dispersion of impact. The throwing direction of a linear screen is concentrated, the movement path of particles on the screen surface is relatively short, and the number of collisions experienced per unit time is smaller but the single impact intensity is higher. The spiral trajectory of the rotary vibratory sieve significantly extends the travel path of material on the screen surface, and the advancement and stratification of particles rely more on the overall loosening and displacement of the material layer than on single high-energy throws. The relative displacement between particles is closer to slow shearing and rolling, and the impact angle and force between particles and screen wires are more dispersed. For materials such as algae powder with low density and fine particle size, this motion pattern completes screening and classification while causing relatively lower disturbance to particle integrity.
Adjustability of amplitude and frequency: translating “gentleness” into parameters
“Gentleness” cannot remain at the level of describing motion trajectories; it needs to be translated into adjustable parameters at the operational level. The amplitude of a rotary vibratory sieve is changed by adjusting the phase angle of the upper and lower eccentric weights, and smaller amplitudes are favorable for fine screening and brittle materials. For spirulina powder, controlling the amplitude within a lower range, combined with an appropriate vibration frequency, can reduce the force of single impacts and the accumulation rate of frictional heat while maintaining the energy required for material layer loosening and screening.
Variable-frequency speed control technology further expands this adjustment space. By changing the power frequency input to the motor, the excitation force can be continuously adjusted without changing the mechanical structure of the eccentric weights. This means the same equipment, when facing different batches of algae powder (with differences in moisture content, particle-size distribution and particle strength), does not have to run with fixed parameters but can find a repeatable operating point between “sufficient for screening” and “not excessively vigorous” according to material conditions. It should be noted that low amplitude is not universally applicable: when amplitude is too low, the advancement speed of the material layer decreases, the residence time of material on the screen surface lengthens, and processing capacity decreases accordingly. The engineering meaning of gentle screening is to strike a balance between processing capacity and material protection, not to sacrifice throughput for “gentleness.”
Beyond gentleness, after gentleness: where quality stability rests
The stabilizing effect of gentle screening on finished product quality is ultimately reflected in two observable dimensions. The first is the narrowing of particle-size distribution: when secondary breakage and fine powder generation are suppressed, the particle-size distribution of the undersize product will not shift toward the fine end due to additional comminution during screening, and batch-to-batch particle-size consistency improves accordingly. The second is that processing losses of active ingredients are controlled within an acceptable range at the screening stage: reducing frictional heat accumulation and light exposure means phycocyanin bears one less segment of unnecessary degradation pressure in the process from drying to packaging.
Gaofu rotary vibratory sieves’ configuration in algae powder scenarios—the gentle spiral conveying brought by three-dimensional compound vibration, the adjustable amplitude and frequency range provided by eccentric weight phase angle and variable-frequency speed control, and the physical separation of light and air exchange by the fully enclosed screen box—all point to a working state in which the screening stage completes particle-size classification with the lowest possible mechanical and thermal disturbance, allowing algae powder entering downstream to be closer to its initial state before screening in terms of particle integrity and active ingredient levels. For spirulina powder that uses phycocyanin content and particle-size consistency as quality indicators, this “subtract less” approach to screening is itself a link in the quality stability chain that deserves serious attention.
