  • Why Protein Powder Fines "Agglomerate"

The agglomeration of protein powder fines results from multiple contributing factors:


Electrostatic attraction is the primary culprit. Protein powder particles are extremely fine. During screening, friction between particles generates static electricity. Charged fine particles attract each other, forming agglomerates, while simultaneously adhering to the screen surface and gradually blocking the mesh.


Low bulk density makes natural settling difficult. Protein powder is lightweight – on conventional vibrating screens, it struggles to pass through high‑mesh screens by gravity alone. Material floats and tumbles on the screen surface but fails to pass through in a timely manner.


High fineness leads to rapid blinding. Whey protein powder particles can be as fine as 43 microns. Soy protein powder typically requires 80‑200 mesh screening. Once fines agglomerate, the mesh becomes blocked quickly, and screening efficiency drops sharply within a short period.


Conventional vibrating screens "vibrate and blind more." The high‑frequency vibration of conventional screens actually intensifies particle friction and static generation, creating a vicious cycle of "more vibration, more blinding."


  • The Centrifugal Sifter – Letting Protein Powder "Float" Through the Screen

The working principle of Gaofu's QLSP series centrifugal sifter is fundamentally different from that of conventional vibrating screens.


Conventional vibrating screens rely on gravity settling and mechanical vibration to make material "bounce" through the screen. The centrifugal sifter works completely differently: material is mixed and atomised with airflow after passing through a screw conveying system, then enters a cylindrical screen drum. Inside the drum, rotor blades subject the material to both centrifugal force and propelling force, forcing it to pass through the screen.


Fine particles that pass through are discharged from the fines outlet, while oversize material travels along the screen wall and is discharged from the oversize outlet.


The key difference is: protein powder no longer "squeezes" through the screen as agglomerates – it is thoroughly dispersed in the airflow and passes through as individual particles "floating" through the mesh.


This technical approach fundamentally solves the agglomeration problem of protein powder fines – the lightweight, easily floating nature of the powder is fully utilised. Material is thoroughly dispersed in the airflow, breaking down agglomerates, so that individual particles pass through the screen sequentially with the airflow.

1. Airflow dispersion – preventing agglomeration at the source

Upon entering the sifter, protein powder is first thoroughly mixed and atomised with high‑speed airflow. Under the strong impact of the airflow, existing agglomerates are rapidly broken apart, and individual particles become suspended in the airflow. Material is thoroughly dispersed in the airflow, with no agglomeration. This process is completed before the material even contacts the screen – fundamentally preventing agglomerates from entering the screening zone.


2. Centrifugal force + propelling force – forced passage through the screen

Dispersed individual particles enter the screen drum with the airflow. Under the dual action of centrifugal force and propelling force generated by the rotor blades, particles are "propelled" toward the screen. Protein powder particles no longer "wait" to pass through – they are "actively" driven through the mesh. Fine particles that pass through are discharged from the fines outlet.


3. Continuous airflow scouring – automatic screen cleaning

On conventional vibrating screens, fine protein powder tends to accumulate statically on the screen surface, gradually blocking the mesh. The centrifugal sifter is different – the screen is continuously scoured by the rotating airflow, achieving automatic self‑cleaning. Material remains suspended in the airflow and cannot accumulate on the screen surface. Fine particles cannot adhere to the screen – blinding is fundamentally eliminated.


4. De‑agglomeration function – breaking soft lumps

Protein powder may form soft lumps during storage or conveying. The QLSP series is equipped with a de‑agglomeration function that breaks up soft lumps. Lumps are dispersed into individual particles before entering the screening zone, preventing screening efficiency loss caused by agglomerates.
