Protein powder screening is far more complex than simply "passing through a screen." Different protein sources present different screening challenges:
Plant protein powders (e.g., soy protein isolate, pea protein) : These materials typically have high protein content and strong adhesion, making them prone to lumping and agglomeration. Soy protein powder is light yellow to off‑white, with a particle size typically in the 100‑150 mesh range. During screening, fine particles generate static electricity from friction, adhering to the screen surface and gradually accumulating to form a "powder film" that blocks the mesh. Additionally, raw materials may contain impurities such as soybean hulls and fibres that need effective separation.
Whey protein powder : Whey protein particles are approximately 43 microns in size – an ultra‑fine powder with good flowability but prone to moisture absorption and lumping. During screening, fine powder tends to clog the screen mesh, affecting filtration efficiency. At the same time, whey protein may contain larger sediment particles that need to be effectively separated through the screen.
Whether plant protein or whey protein, the core objectives of high‑purity screening are the same: removing foreign matter to ensure purity; controlling particle size to ensure uniformity.
Foreign matter in protein powder comes from various sources – residual fibres, hulls, and impurities from raw materials; threads, packaging debris, and other contaminants introduced during processing; and lumps formed during storage and transport. Gaofu's S49 series rotary vibrating sieve effectively removes foreign matter through the following design features:
Three‑dimensional vibration trajectory for thorough material dispersion. Gaofu's rotary vibrating sieve uses a vertical vibration motor as the excitation source. Eccentric weights installed at the top and bottom of the motor convert rotary motion into a three‑dimensional compound motion (horizontal, vertical, and inclined), which is transmitted to the screen surface. Material spreads outward on the screen surface in a spiral path, travelling a relatively long distance across a relatively small screening area. This motion pattern thoroughly disperses the material, making lumps and foreign matter more easily exposed and intercepted.
Multi‑deck grading screens – foreign matter interception and grading in one pass. Gaofu's rotary vibrating sieve supports flexible configurations of 1 to 5 screen decks , enabling 2 to 6 grades of separation or filtration in a single feed. For protein powder processing, the upper deck intercepts large lumps and foreign matter, the middle decks achieve fine classification, and the lower deck acts as a safety screen to ensure finished product purity. Impurities and oversize material are automatically discharged, supporting continuous operation without manual intervention. In soy protein powder screening, multi‑deck screens (customisable from 80 to 200 mesh) achieve simultaneous separation of coarse powder, fine powder, hulls, and dust impurities.
Automatic impurity discharge ensures continuous operation. During screening, impurities and oversize material are automatically discharged from the reject outlet. Operators do not need to stop frequently to clean the screen surface – the equipment can run continuously, effectively improving production efficiency.
Protein powder particle size uniformity directly affects dissolution rate, mouthfeel consistency, and end‑use performance. Gaofu's rotary vibrating sieve provides reliable assurance for protein powder quality stability:
High screening accuracy – precise, controllable fineness. Gaofu's rotary vibrating sieve achieves screening accuracy up to 600 mesh (0.02 mm) and filtration precision down to 5 microns. For typical protein powder screening requirements (24 to 120 mesh), this accuracy capability provides ample margin, ensuring consistent finished product fineness. Common screening meshes for soy protein powder include 24, 40, 60, and 120 mesh. Screening accuracy reaches over 95%.
High classification efficiency – concentrated particle size distribution. Gaofu's S49 series rotary vibrating sieve achieves classification efficiency of 92% to 98%. Screened protein powder particles are uniform in size with concentrated particle size distribution, effectively eliminating size mixing and cross‑contamination. The primary purpose of protein powder screening is to remove impurities, lumps, and agglomerated particles from dried powder, maintaining a fluffy and uniform finished product.
Flexible screen configurations for different fineness requirements. Gaofu's rotary vibrating sieve covers 2 to 500 mesh , with screen sizes flexibly selectable according to the target fineness of the protein powder product. For ultra‑fine powders such as whey protein, 250 to 400 mesh screens can be selected; for soy protein powder, 24 to 120 mesh screens are typical.
The most common challenge in protein powder screening is screen blinding – fine particles clogging the mesh, reducing screening efficiency and requiring frequent stoppages that disrupt production rhythm. Gaofu's rotary vibrating sieve incorporates multiple targeted anti‑blinding design features:
Bouncing ball cleaning system. Bouncing balls continuously rebound between the working screen and the support grid, rapidly breaking up and dispersing protein powder agglomerates that have accumulated around the mesh openings. This system effectively resolves blinding issues caused by light density and easy agglomeration of materials such as soy protein powder.
Ultrasonic cleaning system (optional). For ultra‑fine protein powder screening above 100 mesh, Gaofu's rotary vibrating sieve can be equipped with an ultrasonic cleaning system. High‑frequency vibration keeps fine powder in a "suspended" state on the screen surface, effectively inhibiting adhesion and blinding.
Separate mother‑screen / fine‑screen design extends screen life. Gaofu's rotary vibrating sieve features a unique mother‑screen and fine‑screen separation design – the mother screen fully supports the working fine screen, which does not directly bear the impact of the material. This design significantly extends screen service life, with screen changes taking only 3 to 5 minutes.
When selecting a rotary vibrating sieve for protein powder processing, consider the following dimensions:
Material characteristics determine equipment configuration : For sticky, lump‑prone materials such as soy protein isolate, consider bouncing ball cleaning systems or flexible de‑agglomeration mechanisms; for ultra‑fine, blinding‑prone materials such as whey protein powder, ultrasonic cleaning systems are recommended.
Match screening accuracy with throughput requirements : Select the appropriate screen mesh based on the target fineness of the protein powder product (24 to 120 mesh is a common range). In terms of throughput, Gaofu's S49 series covers 100 to 3,300 kg/h , meeting the capacity needs of various production scales.
Hygiene standards and material requirements : Use 304 or 316L stainless steel for all material‑contact parts to meet food‑grade hygiene standards. The equipment design should have no dead corners and be easy to disassemble and clean.
Selection of screen cleaning method : For conventional materials, bouncing ball cleaning systems are suitable; for ultra‑fine powders above 100 mesh and electrostatic materials, ultrasonic cleaning systems are recommended.
