The corrosiveness of salt materials comes from their chemical composition and physical properties. Table salt (sodium chloride) dissolves in humid environments to form electrolyte solutions that cause electrochemical corrosion on metal surfaces. When potential differences exist on metal surfaces, micro‑galvanic circuits form, accelerating corrosion. Sea salt contains not only sodium chloride but also impurities such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride. These components are more hygroscopic, forming electrolyte solutions with better conductivity and more aggressive corrosion. Dry salt primarily corrodes metal surfaces by forming a salt film after absorbing moisture; wet salt contacts equipment directly as brine solution, corroding faster and more directly.
