Over 10,000+ customers' choice, Focus on screening industry 40+ years
In protein powder production, screening is a seemingly simple but actually critical step. Whether it is soy protein powder, whey protein powder or pea protein powder, the uniformity of finished particle size, solubility and foreign matter control directly determine the product's market competitiveness.
However, protein powder screening is not straightforward. These materials generally share a common problem: they easily agglomerate.
Due to their high protein content and strong surface adhesion, protein powders readily absorb moisture and form lumps during storage and transport. At the same time, ultra‑fine powders often generate static electricity during screening, causing fine particles to adhere to the screen surface and form "false agglomerates". This reduces the effective screening area and significantly lowers accuracy. Traditional vibrating screens, when faced with such materials, often fall into a repetitive cycle of "blinding – stoppage – cleaning – blinding again".
1. Moisture Absorption and Caking: The "Sticky Trap" of Surface Protein
Protein powder has a high surface protein content and easily absorbs moisture in humid environments. Studies have shown that improper humidity control during protein powder storage causes the powder to cake and form lumps, making it impossible to pack directly and affecting both production efficiency and product quality. When traditional screening equipment handles such lumpy materials, large lumps are easily rejected as waste, while small lumps may mix into the finished product, affecting fineness and solubility.
2. Electrostatic Adhesion: The "Invisible Barrier" of Ultra‑Fine Powder
When protein powder reaches 80 mesh or finer, static electricity is readily generated during screening. Static charges cause fine particles to adhere to the screen surface, forming a "powder film" that greatly reduces the effective screening area and causes screening efficiency to drop rapidly. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in dry seasons or during continuous production.
3. Screen Blinding by Adhesion: The "Physical Challenge" of Protein Content
Protein powder itself has a certain adhesiveness. For example, powders with high protein content such as garlic powder are difficult to screen smoothly with traditional vibrating screens because of their inherent stickiness. Soy protein powder and whey protein powder have similar problems – the material tends to "paste" onto the screen surface, requiring frequent stoppages for cleaning.
These three levels of agglomeration problems叠加 make protein powder a recognised "difficult‑to‑screen" material in the screening industry. This is why more and more protein powder producers are looking for alternatives to traditional vibrating screens.
The Gaofu centrifugal sifter uses a screening principle that is fundamentally different from traditional vibrating screens. The equipment is based on the core technology of "airflow atomisation + centrifugal screening", with a cylindrical screen placed inside a sealed housing.
The working process is as follows:
After material enters the equipment through a screw conveying system, it is fully mixed and atomised with air at a certain pressure, and then enters the inner cavity of the cylindrical screen. Inside the cavity, high‑speed rotating impeller blades subject the material to two forces simultaneously: centrifugal force throws the material toward the inner wall of the screen, while a spiral pushing force moves the material forward along the screen cylinder.
Under the combined action of centrifugal force and spiral pushing force, the material passes through the screen in a "jetting" manner. Acceptable fine powder smaller than the mesh openings exits through the screen and is discharged from the fines outlet. Coarse particles and impurities larger than the openings cannot pass through; they move forward along the inner wall of the screen cylinder and are finally discharged from the coarse outlet, achieving rapid separation.
This design fundamentally changes the traditional screening method of "falling by gravity and jumping by vibration". It does not rely on vibration as the main driving force, but uses airflow as the power source, allowing the material to be separated quickly inside a sealed pipeline.
1. Airflow Dispersion and Forced Through‑Screen – Breaking Lumps at the Source
The centrifugal sifter achieves "pre‑dispersion" already at the feeding stage. The material is fully mixed and atomised with air in the screw conveying system and the inner cavity of the screen cylinder. The high‑speed airflow itself has a strong shear‑dispersion effect, loosening lightly agglomerated powder before it reaches the screen. At the same time, the centrifugal force generated by the impeller blades, together with the spiral pushing force, gives the material enough kinetic energy to "jet" through the screen. This also provides a certain forced‑through capability for lumps that are not completely broken, preventing them from being mistakenly rejected as impurities simply because they cannot "squeeze through".
2. Airflow Scouring for Self‑Cleaning – Eliminating Electrostatic Adhesion and Screen Blinding
The root cause of screen blinding in traditional vibrating screens is that once material adheres to the mesh openings, there is no external force to remove it. During screening with the centrifugal sifter, the swirling airflow continuously scours the screen surface. On the one hand, it blows off fine particles adhering to the mesh openings, achieving "self‑cleaning". On the other hand, the continuous airflow effectively disrupts electrostatic adhesion, keeping ultra‑fine powder that would otherwise "stick" to the screen in a suspended state. This means the equipment can run continuously for long periods without frequent stoppages.
In addition, for larger lumps or fibrous agglomerates, the centrifugal sifter also has a re‑crushing function, breaking them down during the screening process and further improving raw material utilisation.
3. Fully Enclosed Structure – Preventing Dust Escape and Secondary Moisture Absorption
During protein powder screening, dust escape is not only an environmental issue but also a quality issue – escaped dust is exposed to the air, where it can further absorb moisture and form more agglomerates. The Gaofu centrifugal sifter has a fully enclosed, sealed structure, with no dust leakage during operation. The material is classified inside a sealed chamber, reducing raw material loss and preventing the finished powder from absorbing moisture and deteriorating due to prolonged exposure to the air – thus reducing agglomeration triggers at the environmental level.
4. Low‑Impact, Heat‑Free Screening – Preserving Protein Activity
Animal protein powders such as whey protein are heat‑sensitive materials. Excessive mechanical friction can raise their temperature, causing protein denaturation and affecting solubility and functional activity. The Gaofu centrifugal sifter uses airflow to move the material. During screening, the material is in a suspended state, with significantly less mechanical contact with the screen and housing. The frictional heat generated is extremely low, causing no additional damage to active protein components. This characteristic makes it particularly suitable for screening high‑functionality products such as whey protein powder and protein isolates.
Based on the characteristics of protein powder – easy agglomeration, strong moisture absorption, and high cleanliness requirements – the Gaofu centrifugal sifter offers the following special configurations:
304 food‑grade stainless steel. Protein powder is directly used in food applications, so the safety of the equipment material is critical. All material‑contact parts of the Gaofu centrifugal sifter are made of high‑quality 304 food‑grade stainless steel, with a finely polished surface, no dead corners, and easy to clean – eliminating material residue and cross‑contamination, meeting food GMP hygiene requirements.
Fully sealed dust control system. The whole machine has excellent sealing performance. Screening takes place inside a sealed chamber – no dust escapes. This not only improves the workshop environment but also effectively prevents external moisture from entering the equipment and causing moisture‑related agglomeration.
Low energy consumption, smooth operation. The machine is compact, lightweight, runs smoothly without vibration or noise, and requires no complex foundation fixing – it can be placed flexibly. Installed power ranges from 0.25 to 3 kW, significantly lower than traditional vibrating screens.
Flexible mesh size configuration. The screen mesh can be selected from 10 to 500 mesh, and can be changed at any time according to production requirements, adapting to the fineness requirements of different protein powder products. Multi‑deck screen designs enable multi‑stage particle size separation, meeting the particle size control needs of protein powder producers for different product grades.
Can be connected in series with a pneumatic conveying system. The centrifugal sifter can be used together with a pneumatic conveying system, directly integrated into the air pipeline to achieve seamless connection from raw material conveying to screening, effectively saving equipment investment and operating resources.
Gas protection system (optional). Purified air can be delivered to both ends of the equipment, effectively reducing the temperature generated during operation, while forming an air barrier around the bearings to prevent dust ingress and extend bearing life.
